  3. In both cases.
Correct answer The interior lighting of the vehicle interior does not work.

Explanation

When the interior lighting of the bus compartment does not work.

Passenger compartment lighting on a bus is mandatory equipment and its failure prohibits operation on its own. Unlike the occupant of a passenger car, a bus passenger walks about in a moving space: he climbs the steps, moves along the aisle, takes hold of a handrail, and must be able to see the doors and emergency exits. A dark compartment means falling when the bus brakes, catching a foot on a step and, above all, slower evacuation in an emergency, where every second of delay has a cost.

Measure the numerical option by the right criterion. The minimum permitted tread depth for a bus is 2.0 mm, so 2.5 mm is above the legal limit and entirely permitted. The mind usually reads any small figure as "low", and that is what causes the wrong choice; but in this chapter you must always compare the figure with the ceiling for that vehicle type. Keep the table fixed: passenger car 1.6, goods vehicle 1.0, bus 2.0 and motorcycle 0.8 mm.

The combination of these two points makes up the exam's common pattern: one numerical option that is within the permitted range and one genuine defect. If you measure the figure correctly, the answer becomes obvious by itself.

• A tread of 2.5 mm is above the bus minimum of 2.0 mm and does not count as an offence; the figure looks small but is still permitted. • Since the tread depth is within the permitted range, "in both cases" cannot be correct.
