In which picture does the driver turn correctly?
Answer options
Explanation
In the left picture.
The two pictures must be read with two different signals. In the left picture the controller's arms are lowered. The meaning of this signal is definite: from his left and right sides only going straight and turning right are free, and from the chest and back sides no movement at all is permitted. The blue car's driver has come from the controller's side and has made a right turn — the only turn this signal leaves open — so his manoeuvre is correct.
In the right picture, the controller has extended his right arm forward. This signal is stricter and has only three cases: from the controller's left side movement in all directions, from the chest side only a right turn, and from his right side and from behind his back no movement at all. The vehicle crossing the junction in that picture comes from behind the controller's back, that is, from the side this signal has completely closed.
Worth memorising for this whole class of question: the right turn is the only turn the controller's signals readily leave open, because it cuts across no other flow. A left turn and a U-turn are always restricted or prohibited. And at a junction with tram tracks, even when the signal permits you to move, before crossing the rails you must be sure the tram's path is clear; a tram can neither leave the rails nor stop within a short distance.
• In the right picture, the controller's right arm is extended forward and the vehicle enters the junction from behind his back; movement from behind the controller's back is not permitted in any direction under this signal, so that manoeuvre cannot be correct.
