Which picture shows the main road?
Answer options
Explanation
The lower picture and the left picture.
In the left picture the yellow diamond sign with a white border is posted beside the junction; this sign directly announces that your road is the priority road and that you have priority at the junctions ahead. In the lower picture a red triangular sign with the figure of a junction is visible, in which the vertical line — that is, your own road — is drawn bold and thick and the crossing line thin; this means a minor road joins your road and again you are on the priority road.
The right-hand picture has only a blue information sign. Blue signs do not determine the priority situation; they give information about the organisation of traffic. The absence of a priority sign means that the position at that junction must be determined by other rules, not that it is a priority road.
Safety reason: a priority road is not a "feeling". Greater width, better asphalt or a busier street creates no priority whatever. Only the signs of the priority group — and, in their absence, the type of road surface — determine who is the priority road. The common exam trap is to take the colour and size of any sign as a mark of the road's importance; only the shape and group of the sign matter.
• "Only left" ignores the lower picture; the triangular "junction with a minor road" sign also shows that your road is the priority one. • "All" is wrong because in the right-hand picture there is no priority sign at all; a blue information sign does not make a road the priority road.
