Ticket 6 · question 29 Updated:

Answer options

  1. Straight ahead and to the left.
  2. In all directions. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer In all directions.

Explanation

In all directions.

When the traffic controller's right arm is extended forward, whoever reaches the junction from his left side has the freest position of all: he may go straight, turn left, turn right and make a U-turn.

To memorise this case correctly, look at the controller's body as a living sign. The extended arm separates the flow on his left from the oncoming flow and effectively plays the same role a full green light plays. In this same position, whoever comes from the controller's chest side has only the right to turn right, and from his right side and from behind his back no movement is permitted at all.

The safety logic of this division is the separation of crossing paths: one flow is made completely free, and no other permitted movement cuts across it. Because only a right turn is permitted from the front and nobody moves from the other two sides, the path from the left side stays open in all directions.

The common trap is the option "straight and to the left"; drivers unconsciously compare this position with a traffic light and drop the right turn and the U-turn. Remember that a controller's signal takes precedence over lights and signs, so memorise all four of these cases in full.

• "Straight and to the left" is incomplete: in this position a right turn and a U-turn are also permitted to whoever comes from the controller's left side, so limiting the answer to two directions is wrong.
