This sign

Answer options

  1. Shows the directions of movement at the intersection ✓ Correct answer
  2. Prohibits traffic at an intersection
Correct answer Shows the directions of movement at the intersection

Explanation

It shows the permitted directions of travel at the junction ahead.

What you see at the end of the road is a red-and-white rectangular sign with arrows pointing both left and right. This sign is mounted on the fence opposite, directly in the driver's line of sight, and has a single message: the road does not continue straight from here and at the junction ahead you must turn left or right.

In the picture, a narrow asphalt road reaches a crossing road, and behind it are a green fence and a residential building; that is, if you go straight you will drive directly into a yard. The sign's safety value shows at night and in fog: its surface is retroreflective and returns your headlights, so the driver sees the wall ahead before he can make out the end of the road and reduces speed in time. The same sign is also used on sharp bends with a one-way arrow.

Worth memorising: do not equate the colour red with prohibition. Prohibitory signs in Armenia are round with a red border; this sign is rectangular and prohibits no passage at all, it merely gives direction. The exam trap is built precisely on that similarity of colour.

• It is tempting because the sign is all red and looks like a barrier; but a prohibition on movement is announced by a round sign with a red border, and here only the direction of turning is shown.
