In this situation, is the driver allowed to drive on the tram tracks?
Answer options
Explanation
No. Tram rails are not an ordinary traffic lane. Driving on same-direction rails laid level with the carriageway is permitted only in exceptional cases: when all the lanes of your direction are occupied, or to pass an obstacle and to turn left or make a U-turn; entering the rails of the opposite direction is never permitted. None of those exceptions applies here — the driver is going straight ahead, not turning, and the right-hand lanes are clear, so the all lanes occupied excuse does not exist. More decisively, the two blue signs above the carriageway prescribe the permitted direction for each lane, and the driver must use those lanes rather than the rails. Remember that a tram cannot steer aside and needs tens of metres to stop.
