Which vehicles are allowed to park in the area of influence of the given road sign?
Answer options
Explanation
Vehicles driven by disabled persons and taxis with the meter running.
The round blue sign with a red border and one oblique stroke is "parking prohibited". This sign does not close off a brief stop — you may stop to pick up or set down passengers or to load — but parking, that is, a long stop unconnected with picking up and setting down, is prohibited within its zone of effect.
The legislator has provided two exceptions to this sign: a vehicle driven by a disabled driver, and a taxi whose meter is running. The logic of both exceptions is the same and comes down to walking distance. For a disabled driver, parking further away can mean the destination becomes unreachable. A taxi with the meter running is in fact providing a service, and its stop is short and functional, not a long occupation of space.
Keep two points together. First, do not confuse "parking prohibited" with "stopping prohibited"; the latter is stricter and closes off even a brief halt. Second, the exception is conditional: the meter must actually be running, and merely being a taxi is not enough. The safety reason for the prohibition itself is simple too — a car parked in the wrong place blocks the view of pedestrians and drivers and reduces the usable width of the carriageway; in Yerevan's narrow streets that leads daily to forced overtaking and side impacts.
• Public-transport vehicles are not an exception to this sign; the exceptions are limited to a disabled driver and a taxi with the meter running.
