The car will drive through the intersection:

Answer options

  1. The first. ✓ Correct answer
  2. The second.
Correct answer The first.

Explanation

First.

The light facing the car shows a plain green, but the light on the tram's side shows the main red lamp lit and only the green arrow of the additional section glows, for a right turn. So the order of passage is settled: the car first, then the tram.

The rule is that moving on the arrow of an additional section while the main lamp is red creates no priority; it merely permits entry into a specific path, and the driver is obliged to give way to vehicles coming from other directions on the main signal. This ruling admits no exception for a tram either.

There is an important teaching point here that should lock into your mind: the precedence of a rail vehicle is not absolute. A tram takes precedence over a car only in equal conditions — that is, when the signals or the priority indications are the same for both. In this picture the signals are not equal: one has a full green and the other only a conditional arrow. The safety reason is the usual one; a car with a full green does not reduce its speed and expects no obstacle. If the tram enters relying on an imaginary precedence, the car will realise only when it no longer has braking distance. Memorise: a full green takes precedence over the arrow of an additional section, regardless of the type of vehicle.

• "Second" means treating the tram as taking precedence; but the tram is moving on the arrow of an additional section under a main red lamp and must give way to a car that has a full green.
