The cars will drive through the intersection in the following order:
Answer options
Explanation
Red, blue, green.
The yellow diamond on the left shows that the horizontal road — the one on which the red car and the blue car are travelling — is the priority road, and the inverted red triangle on the right tells the green car that it must give way. So the green car is last in any case and has no right to enter until the priority road is clear.
Between the two priority-road cars, the red car goes straight and the blue car, with its left indicator on, is turning left. A driver turning left must give priority to vehicles coming straight from the opposite direction; hence the order is red, blue, green. The safety reason for this rule is clear: it is the turning car that cuts across the opposing flow, so the burden of decision and the burden of observation rest on it, not on the one who is merely continuing straight ahead.
Worth memorising: being on the priority road does not license you to turn without care. The priority-road sign only puts you ahead of the minor-road cars; against the oncoming flow on that same priority road you are still obliged to give way. The green car, before moving, must also check both directions of the priority road, not just one of them.
• "Blue, green, red" puts the turning car ahead of the straight-ahead flow; blue must give way to the oncoming red car, and the green car with its "give way" sign cannot be second either. • "Green, red, blue" sends first the car with the inverted red triangle in front of it; the green car may enter only after both priority-road cars have passed.
