The driver of which vehicle must give way?
Answer options
Explanation
The road vehicle must give way; the tram has priority. In equal conditions a tram has priority over every non-rail vehicle regardless of its own or their direction of travel. Equal conditions means that neither traffic lights nor priority signs have settled the matter differently — and in that case the tram's priority overrides even the right-hand rule, so a tram approaching from your left still goes first. The reason is mechanical: a tram cannot steer out of its path and its stopping distance is very long, so the steerable vehicle waits. Two exceptions to remember: outside equal conditions the tram has no priority, and a tram leaving a depot must give way to everyone.
