Explanation

The blue car.

Beside the blue car stands the yellow diamond "priority road" sign, and directly beneath it the white supplementary plate "direction of the priority road" with its thick angled line; this plate says the priority road changes direction at this very junction and does not continue straight. That is, both the blue car and the green car are on the priority road, and the priority road passes from one of their paths into the other.

When two vehicles are both on the priority road, the sign no longer arbitrates between them and one must turn to the general rules: the blue car is on the green car's right, so blue goes through the junction first. The green car, which has signalled left and wants to cut across blue's path, must wait. Safety reason: the "direction of the priority road" plate was made for exactly this moment. A driver who sees only the yellow diamond imagines he owns the road right through the junction and enters at speed; the supplementary plate shows him the shape of the junction and from which side he should expect a vehicle of his own rank. That single piece of information reduces front-to-side collisions at bent junctions.

Trap: in these pictures there is always a vehicle that is not in the queue at all. First establish who is actually approaching the junction, then read the signs, and finally apply the right-hand rule.

• The red car is on the opposite side and is moving away from the junction; it does not enter the order of passage at all. • Green is also on the priority road, but it has the blue car on its right and moreover intends to turn left; so it is second.
