The first to drive through the intersection:

Answer options

  1. Green car. ✓ Correct answer
  2. Red car.
  3. Blue car.
Correct answer Green car.

Explanation

The green car.

There is no traffic light and no priority sign in the picture; so the junction is one of "equal status" and the order of passage is set solely by the right-hand rule: give way to a vehicle approaching from your right.

The road on the green car's right is empty and nobody is coming from that side, so there is no restriction on it and it is the first vehicle to enter the junction. The blue car sees green on its right and must wait; the red car in turn has blue on its right and is last. The whole chain: green, blue, red. The safety reason for this rule is a clear division of responsibility. At a junction without signs, two drivers reach the point of intersection almost simultaneously; if both stop the junction locks up, and if both move a front-to-side collision occurs. The convention "the right has priority" takes the decision out of guesswork and courtesy, and everyone knows what the other will do.

Worth memorising for the exam: in every picture, look first for the vehicle whose right is empty; it is always first. The size of the vehicle, the load on it, whether it is a lorry or a car, and even its distance from the junction line play no part in the order.

• Red is last; the blue car is on its right and it must give way to it. • Blue is second, because the green car comes from its right and it must let it through first.
