The first to drive through the intersection:

Answer options

  1. Green car.
  2. Blue car.
  3. Red car. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer Red car.

Explanation

The red car.

There is no sign, no traffic light and no priority marking in the picture; so you are facing a junction of equal-status roads without control, and the only decision tool is the right-hand rule: every driver gives priority to the vehicle coming from his right.

There are three vehicles in the scene. The red car's right is empty, so nobody is ahead of it and it passes through the junction first. The green car has red on its right and must wait; it moves second. The blue car in turn has the green car on its right, so it is third and last. The chain unravels easily because one arm of the junction is empty.

Memorise the method for solving this kind of question: instead of starting from yourself, first look for the vehicle whose right is empty; it is always first. Then remove it from the scene and ask the same question again. The safety reason is clear too: an uncontrolled junction is where buildings, trees and roadside bushes block both parties' view — just like the yellow building in the corner of this very picture. If the order is not fixed, two drivers enter simultaneously and a side impact follows; a collision in which the occupant on the struck side has virtually no protection.

• The green car is close to the junction and looks likely to arrive first, but the red car is on its right and it must give it priority; green's place is second. • The blue car has the green car on its right and must move last; being close to the junction creates no right for it.
