From which lane should you turn right in the situation shown?
Answer options
Explanation
From the far right lane — the one marked with the letter "A" on the asphalt.
The blue sign at the roadside, with an upward arrow and a public transport symbol, marks a lane reserved for public transport vehicles running in your direction of travel, and the large letter "A" on the carriageway repeats the same message. The general rule is that movement and stopping by other vehicles in this lane is prohibited, but it has one decisive exception: if the reserved lane is separated from the rest of the carriageway by a broken line — exactly what you see in the picture — a driver intending to turn right must move into this lane before the intersection and make the turn from it.
The safety logic is clear: if you turn right from the second lane, your path cuts across the reserved lane and a bus travelling straight ends up precisely in your right-hand blind spot. Beyond that, a right turn from the second lane traces a wide, open arc that sweeps over the edge of the carriageway and the pedestrian crossing. By entering the right lane in good time, the car gathers itself against the kerb, its speed drops, and no path is cut.
Remember this: the type of marking beside the reserved lane settles the matter. A broken line means "for turning you are both allowed and obliged to enter"; a solid line means "no entry", and in that case the turn is made from the lane adjacent to the reserved one. This is where the exam trap lies; many people, having heard "don't enter the bus lane", pick the second-lane option without looking at the marking.
• "Only from the second lane" is the answer for the case where the reserved lane is separated by a solid line; in the picture the marking is broken, so not only is entering lane "A" permitted, the right turn must be made from that very lane.
