When making a turn the driver must give way to
Answer options
Explanation
To both the cyclist and the pedestrian.
You have signalled right and the light is green. On the right of the picture a round blue sign with a bicycle and a downward arrow is posted — that is, a dedicated cycle path — and on the carriageway a marking of broken squares, that is, a cycle crossing, is drawn. A cyclist is crossing on exactly that crossing and several pedestrians are standing beside the pedestrian markings.
The rule: when turning, a driver is obliged to give way both to pedestrians crossing the carriageway of the destination street and to cyclists crossing on a dedicated path or a cycle crossing. Your right turn takes you over both markings, so both groups take precedence.
Safety reason: a cyclist travels at close to 20 km/h, that is, about three times a pedestrian's speed. A turning driver usually takes only a brief glance at the mirror and over his right shoulder, and at that very moment the cyclist is in the blind spot beside the car; this is exactly the classic "right turn over a cyclist" crash pattern.
Worth memorising: before every right turn, two separate checks are needed — one of the right mirror and blind spot for the bicycle, one direct look at the pedestrian markings. The exam trap is the options that name only one of these two.
• The pedestrian has priority, but this option removes the cyclist who is crossing on the cycle crossing; the dedicated cycle path is marked with a round blue sign. • The cyclist takes precedence, but this option sets the pedestrians aside; the right turn also passes over the pedestrian markings.
