The second to drive through the intersection:

Answer options

  1. White car, at the same time as the yellow one.
  2. Red car. ✓ Correct answer
  3. Green car.
Correct answer Red car.

Explanation

The red car.

Two signs explain the whole picture. The yellow diamond on the right faces the red car: the red car's road is the priority road, and the road opposite it — from which the green car comes — continues that same priority road. The red triangle in the middle of the picture announces "give way" to the white car, so the white car's road and the road of the yellow car opposite it are minor roads.

So first the two priority-road vehicles pass, and then the two minor-road vehicles. Between the green and the red, the green car comes straight without indicators and the red car has signalled left; a left turn gives way to the oncoming vehicle. So the green is first and the red is second.

The pattern to take away from this question is a two-stage one: the first stage is the signs, which separate the priority road from the minor road; the second stage is the indicators, which set the order within each group. If you mix the two stages you arrive at options such as "two minor-road vehicles going simultaneously", which look logical at first glance. Simultaneity means something only when two vehicles' paths do not cross each other at all, not merely when both are on the same road.

• "White at the same time as yellow" is attractive because both are on the minor road, but the minor road takes its turn after the priority road, and these two cannot be the second to pass. • The green car comes straight on the priority road and the left-turning red car must give way to it; so the green is first, not second.
