The second to drive through the intersection:

Answer options

  1. Green car.
  2. Red car. ✓ Correct answer
  3. Blue car.
Correct answer Red car.

Explanation

The red car.

The yellow diamond in the middle of the picture faces the red car: the road on which the red car travels is the priority road, and the road opposite it — from which the blue car comes — is the continuation of that same priority road. The red triangle on the right says "give way" to the green car; that is, the green car is on the minor road.

Now look at the indicators. The red car has signalled left and the blue car comes straight without indicators. Both are on the priority road, so the signs do not decide between them and another rule comes in: a left turn must give way to the oncoming vehicle. Therefore the blue car passes first, the red car turns second, and the green car waiting behind the triangle is left last.

The key point is that the priority road sign clarifies the relationship between two crossing roads, not the relationship between two vehicles facing each other on that same priority road. Many candidates, on seeing the yellow diamond, assume the vehicle beside the sign goes first; that is exactly where the trap is set. For two opposing vehicles on one road, always go to the indicators: the one going straight is ahead, the one turning left is behind him.

• The green car has the give-way triangle facing it and comes from the minor road; it is the last to pass. • The blue car comes straight on the priority road, so it is the first to pass, not the second.
