This sign indicates the approach of such a tunnel
Answer options
Explanation
A tunnel in which there is no artificial lighting.
The red triangle with the image of a tunnel mouth is a warning sign and announces that you are approaching a tunnel with no artificial lighting, or one where the driver's view of the entrance is restricted. In this very picture the situation is exactly that: after a gentle curve the road reaches the narrow, dark mouth of the tunnel, and from behind the wheel the interior looks like a black patch.
The safety reason for this warning is the eye's adaptation to darkness. The human eye needs several seconds to adjust to a sudden drop in light, and during those seconds it is effectively blind. At 90 km/h you pass 25 metres of road unseen every second; if a vehicle inside the tunnel has broken down or is moving slowly, a rear-end collision is almost certain. The sign is placed precisely so that before reaching the mouth you reduce speed, switch on your headlights, increase your following distance and take off your sunglasses. Leaving the tunnel presents the opposite problem: a sudden burst of bright light.
Worth memorising: the subject of this sign is "light", not the state of the road surface. Warning signs do not warn about the absence of markings; a road's lack of markings announces itself to the driver by the absence of markings, not by a sign.
• The absence of markings is something the driver sees directly on the road surface, and no warning sign is defined for it; this option is tempting only because it sounds like "something a tunnel does not have".
