Traffic is allowed:
Answer options
Explanation
Only a right turn, and into the first entrance.
The controller's right arm is extended forward and his chest faces the red car. Memorise the meaning of this signal word for word: from the controller's chest side only a right turn is permitted; from his left side movement in all directions is free; from his right side and from behind his back no movement at all is permitted. So for this car's driver, both straight ahead and a left turn are closed, and the only remaining possibility is a right turn.
The second half of the question is about the turn itself. The road opening on the right is divided by a green island into two entrances. "Turning right" means entering the nearest mouth, that is, the first entrance. If you pass by the first entrance in order to reach the second, you have in effect travelled part of the junction straight ahead — precisely the movement the controller's signal has prohibited — and at the end you enter from the wrong side a carriageway intended for the opposing flow.
A short rule for the exam and for the street: a right turn is always made at the nearest mouth and hugging the right edge of the carriageway. Its safety reason is tangible too; a short arc hugging the edge has the least interference with the paths of pedestrians and other vehicles, whereas passing the first mouth and turning into the second means drawing a long arc through the heart of the junction that no other driver expects.
• Straight-ahead movement from the controller's chest side, when his right arm is extended forward, is absolutely prohibited; this signal leaves only one direction open. • The second entrance means you must first pass by the first entrance, and that passing counts as straight-ahead movement in the junction, which is prohibited. • Since the second entrance is wrong on its own, an option treating both entrances as permitted is wrong too; only the first mouth is available to you.
