Vehicles will cross the intersection in the following order:

Answer options

  1. Passenger car, bus, trolleybus.
  2. Trolleybus and bus, passenger car.
  3. Trolleybus, passenger car, bus. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer Trolleybus, passenger car, bus.

Explanation

Trolleybus, passenger car, bus.

The yellow diamond sign on the right of the picture says this is the priority road, and the square sign beneath it shows the direction of the priority road: the priority road does not continue straight but turns at the junction. The trolleybus coming from the left is on that same priority road, and the arrow of its path shows it turning right along the priority road. The yellow passenger car at the lower right is also on that priority road, but in the opposite direction and turning left. The yellow bus on the right enters the junction from the minor road.

The order becomes clear from that. The trolleybus turns right and cuts across nobody's path, so it goes first. The passenger car, although on the priority road, is turning left and must give way to the oncoming vehicle; so it is second. The bus is left last, because it enters the priority road from the minor road.

The main trap in this question is the names of the vehicles. A bus and a trolleybus are both public transport and the mind wrongly credits them with an advantage. The only vehicle with priority over non-rail vehicles in otherwise equal conditions is a tram; a trolleybus, despite the wire above it, is an ordinary vehicle as regards priority. Here the trolleybus goes first because it is on the priority road, not because it is a trolleybus.

• "Passenger car, bus, trolleybus" both puts the left-turner first and places the minor-road vehicle ahead of the priority-road vehicle; both are contrary to the rule. • "Trolleybus and bus together" is tempting because both are public transport; but one is on the priority road and the other on the minor road, so their going simultaneously is meaningless.
