Vehicles will drive through the intersection in the following order:
Answer options
Explanation
The bus, then the passenger car and the lorry simultaneously.
The inverted red "give way" triangle together with the supplementary plate beneath it makes the situation clear: your road is the minor one, and the priority road does not continue straight through this junction but changes direction. The thick line on the supplementary plate is that priority road, and the thin lines show the minor roads.
The bus is travelling on the priority road and is first in the order of passage. The red car is also on the priority road, but it must let the bus go first; because the sign draws no distinction between two vehicles both on the priority road, and the arbitration falls back on the general rules — the right-hand rule and the turning rule. After the bus has passed, the red car's path and the lorry's path (marked by the white arrows on the carriageway) do not cross, and those two can move simultaneously.
Two points to memorise: first, never ignore the supplementary plate showing the direction of the priority road; without it, a minor-road driver imagines he need only watch one direction, whereas a bent priority road reaches the junction from two sides. Second, "give way" does not mean "you must stop"; if the way is genuinely clear you may pass without stopping, but you have no right to force any vehicle to change its speed or path.
• This order puts the bus last, whereas the bus is on the priority road and passes through the junction before the passenger car and the lorry.
