Vehicles will drive through the intersection in the following order:
Answer options
Explanation
Motorcycle, then bus, then tram and ambulance, and last the car.
The "give way" sign and the supplementary priority-road direction plate show that the priority road comes from the opposite side and turns to the left. The motorcycle on the left and the bus opposite are on that priority road, so they pass through the junction first; and because both are on the priority road, they apply the right-hand rule between themselves, and the motorcycle, being on the bus's right, goes ahead.
Then it is the minor road's turn: the tram and the ambulance. The tram is a rail vehicle and in equal conditions has precedence over non-rail vehicles; the ambulance, for its part, comes from the yellow car's right. Therefore the yellow car is the last vehicle to move.
The main trap in this question is the ambulance. An ambulance has special priority only when its blue rotating beacon is on and its siren is sounding; in that state everyone else is obliged to clear the way. In this picture the ambulance has no warning signal on and is not on an emergency call, so it is treated exactly like an ordinary car. Remember: a red cross on the bodywork brings no priority; a rotating beacon and a sounding siren bring priority.
• This puts the ambulance first; but an ambulance without a beacon and siren has no advantage and counts as an ordinary vehicle on the minor road. Besides, the tram is also on the minor road and cannot go ahead of the priority-road motorcycle and bus.
