The tram, then the car and the bus simultaneously.

The yellow diamond on the right of the picture is posted facing the road carrying the tram rails; that is, the tram is travelling on the priority road. Facing them, the bus and the green car each have the red "give way" triangle in front of them and are on the minor road. So the tram passes through the junction first, unconditionally.

The second stage is where most candidates go wrong. The bus and the green car face each other on one road and both are going straight; their paths do not cross, so neither needs to wait for the other and they can move simultaneously. Priority means something only when two paths meet.

The safety reason for the tram's precedence is technical: a weight of tens of tonnes, forced movement on rails and the inability to steer round an obstacle make its stopping distance several times a car's; if a vehicle from the minor road gets onto the rails first, the tram driver has no escape. For the exam keep these two points together: the "give way" sign puts you behind every priority-road vehicle, and two vehicles facing each other and both going straight pass simultaneously.

• This option identifies the tram's position correctly but lines the bus and the car up one behind the other; whereas those two face each other going straight and their paths do not intersect, so there is no reason for either to wait for the other. • This puts the bus ahead of the tram. The bus has the "give way" sign and is on the minor road; entering before the priority-road tram is both an offence and dangerous.
