Vehicles will drive through the intersection in the following order:
Answer options
Explanation
The lorry, then the car and last the bus.
Read the yellow diamond "priority road" and the supplementary plate beneath it together: the thick line comes from the road the red car is on and turns to the right. So the priority road enters the junction along the red car's path and continues towards the white lorry; the bus opposite is on the minor road.
The red car and the lorry are both on the priority road, and because the priority road changes direction within the junction they behave towards each other as at a junction of equal-status roads. The lorry is on the red car's right, so the lorry passes first. Beyond that, the red car is turning left and must also leave the lorry's through path clear. The bus, coming from the minor road, moves after both.
Worth memorising: the priority-road sign only frees you from competing with the minor road, not from competing with someone who is also on the priority road. Whenever you see the thick line turning on the supplementary plate, know that you may have to give priority to another priority-road vehicle as well. The exam trap is to put the big bus opposite first; but it comes from the minor road, and this same mistake is repeated in every option that begins with the bus.
• This puts the bus first; the bus enters from the minor road and must give priority to both priority-road vehicles. • This again sends the minor-road bus ahead and moreover puts the car before the lorry, whereas the lorry is on the car's right.
