The lorry, then the tram and the bus, and last the motorcycle and the car.

The "give way" sign is posted with the supplementary priority-road direction plate beneath it. On that plate the thick line comes from the road opposite and turns to the left; that is, the priority road enters the junction along the blue lorry's path and continues to the left. All the other vehicles — the tram, the yellow car, the motorcycle and the bus on the right — are on minor roads. So the lorry passes first.

After that, all the rest are of equal rank, and here two rules operate at once. First: a tram is a rail vehicle and in equal conditions has precedence over all non-rail vehicles, no matter which side it comes from. Second: the bus approaches the junction from the right of the motorcycle and the car, so those two must give way to it as well. The tram's path and the bus's path do not conflict and they can pass one after another without contention; the motorcycle and the car are left last.

Worth memorising: the tram's precedence is not absolute. A tram too, if it is on the minor road, gives priority to the priority road like everyone else. A tram has precedence only when the roads are of equal status. There is a technical reason as well: a tram is locked onto rails, cannot deviate and has a long stopping distance, so in equal conditions it is logical for the burden of decision to fall on the driver with better steering and braking.

• This puts the tram and the bus ahead of the lorry. The tram's precedence means something only at a junction of equal-status roads; when the tram is on the minor road it must, like everyone else, give priority to the priority-road lorry.
