Ticket 2 · question 4 Updated:

Answer options

  1. 16 years of age.
  2. 17 years of age.
  3. 18 years of age. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer 18 years of age.

Explanation

18 years — category "A" is issued from the age of eighteen.

The rule: category "A" is issued from eighteen, the same age at which category "B" begins. "A" covers motorcycles with no limit on engine capacity or power — a vehicle whose power-to-weight ratio is several times that of a passenger car, which reaches high speeds in seconds and offers the rider no protective shell against error. The legislator took precisely this into account and did not set its age below the car category, even though a motorcycle is smaller and lighter than a car: the criterion is not the size of the vehicle but the acceleration and the rider's vulnerability.

The trap in this question is options 16 and 17. In the candidate's mind those numbers come from lighter sub-categories such as "AM" and from the age permitted for sitting the practical test — not from the issuing age of an "A" licence. Memorise 18 and tie it to "the age at which independent driving starts".

• 16 is below the legal age for independent driving and has nothing to do with category "A"; lighter sub-categories have their own separate arrangement. • 17 is the age for sitting the practical test, not the issuing age of the licence. At 17 you may take the test, but the "A" document is not handed over.
