Answer options

  1. 17 years of age.
  2. 18 years of age.
  3. 19 years of age. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer 19 years of age.

Explanation

19 years — a category "BE" licence is not issued before that age.

The rule: the minimum age for category "BE" is nineteen full years, whereas category "B" itself is issued from eighteen. "BE" means a passenger car with a trailer heavier than category "B" permits, and driving a car-and-trailer combination requires different skills: the combination is longer, the steering works in reverse when backing, the trailer's rear wheels cut inside the car's path, and the braking distance is longer because of the extra mass. That is why the legislator requires one year more than the base category, so the driver has ordinary driving experience before hitching a trailer.

Memorise the number 19 precisely, because in the exam 18 always sits next to it as a decoy. Remember the general age pattern too: the greater the mass and length of the combination, the higher the required age — "A" and "B" eighteen years, "BE" nineteen, "D" and "D1" twenty-one.

• 17 is not the issuing age for any licence in this system; at 17 only sitting the practical test is possible, and even then without receiving the document. • 18 is the age for the base category "B", not "BE". Adding the letter "E" means authorisation to tow a heavy trailer, and that alone requires one year more.
