Is it allowed to approach the passenger with reverse?

Ticket 1 · question 109 Updated:

Is it allowed to approach the passenger with reverse?

Answer options

  1. Yes ✓ Correct answer
  2. No
Correct answer Yes

Explanation

Yes. Reversing is not prohibited on this stretch of road.

Reversing is banned only at intersections and in the same places where U-turns are banned: pedestrian crossings, tunnels, on and under bridges and overpasses, level crossings, public-transport stops, and anywhere visibility is under 100 m in at least one direction. None of these appear here — it is a straight section of street and the passenger is waiting at the right-hand kerb.

The round blue sign with the upward arrow prohibits nothing relevant: it prescribes the permitted direction of travel through the intersection ahead, and its scope is that intersection, not your behaviour on this stretch. So backing up to reach the passenger is allowed.

But permitted does not mean safe. While reversing you must ensure the manoeuvre endangers or obstructs no one; an oncoming car is approaching and your rearward view is limited. Go slowly, only as far as needed, and get help if you cannot see.

Exam key: you will meet near-identical questions where one answer is Yes and the other No. The difference is always the location. If a bus stop, bridge, intersection or crossing is in frame, the answer becomes No; here there is none.

• "No" usually comes from assuming the round "straight ahead only" sign forbids reversing; but that sign governs the intersection ahead, and this stretch is not one of the places where reversing is banned.
