Which answer correctly indicates the order of passing an intersection?

Answer options

  1. A bus, a car, a bicycle.
  2. A car, a bus, a bicycle.
  3. Bicycle, bus, passenger car ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer Bicycle, bus, passenger car

Explanation

First the bicycle, then the bus, last the passenger car.

This is an equal-status junction: there are no priority signs and no lights. So the right-hand rule applies, and in addition anyone turning left must give way to oncoming vehicles.

We have three vehicles in the picture: the cyclist entering the junction from the top, the bus coming from the right, and the blue passenger car coming from the bottom with its left indicator on. Solve the relationships in pairs. The bus has the bicycle on its right, so it must give way to the bicycle. The passenger car has the bus on its right, so it gives way to the bus. Moreover, the passenger car is turning left and the cyclist is opposite it, so it gives way to the bicycle too. The result: bicycle, bus, passenger car.

The point repeated many times in the exam is that a bicycle is a full vehicle and at a junction has the same priority as a car. The size and weight of a bus give it no advantage. That same misconception — "the bus is big, so it goes first" — is one of the commonest roots of collisions with cyclists at unmarked junctions. A practical method instead of memorising the order: each time ask yourself three questions — who is on my right? am I turning left? is anyone opposite me?

• It puts the bicycle last; but the bicycle is both on the bus's right and opposite the passenger car, so it has priority in both relationships and goes first. • The passenger car both has the bus on its right and is turning left; for two independent reasons it cannot be the first to pass.
