  3. Ought to give way to the bus driver ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer Ought to give way to the bus driver

Explanation

You must give way to the bus driver.

The yellow diamond on the right means you are travelling on the priority road. This sign protects you against everyone entering from side streets and adjacent entrances, but it gives you no advantage whatever against the oncoming traffic on that same priority road. The bus coming towards you in the picture is travelling on exactly that priority road, in the opposite direction.

The governing rule is: a driver turning left or making a U-turn must give way to vehicles coming from the opposite direction going straight. To reach the second entrance you must cut across the full width of the opposing path, so you must not begin the manoeuvre until the bus has passed completely. Do not forget that the pedestrian crossing in front of the bus and the cyclist moving on the left also lie on your turning path.

Safety reason: a car going straight has a predictable path and a constant speed, whereas one turning left reduces speed and changes its angle. The bus, too, has a long braking distance because of its mass. The cheapest stop is yours.

Common trap: "I am on the priority road, so I take precedence". The priority road merely orders the junction, not your relationship with oncoming traffic.

• Being on the priority road creates no absolute priority; that advantage means something against minor roads, not against a car coming straight towards you. • "All the drivers" is too broad; drivers entering from side streets must give way to you, and only the oncoming bus takes precedence over you.
