In which direction can the driver continue driving?
Answer options
Explanation
Only to the right, and only into the first entrance.
The main light in the picture is red, and beside it the light's additional section is lit with a green arrow pointing right. The green arrow of an additional section permits movement only in the direction of that arrow and gives no permission whatever for straight-ahead movement. Because going straight is prohibited, you cannot pass the first entrance at all in order to reach the second; therefore the only reachable destination is that first entrance on the right, seen in the picture between the green islands.
The safety reason for this design is the separation of flows: the additional section permits a right turn while the straight and left flows are still held behind the red light. If drivers took the green arrow as permission to pass straight through, they would enter a junction in which the perpendicular flow has a green — precisely the angled collision the light works to prevent.
Two points to memorise: first, moving on the green arrow of an additional section brings no priority, and you must give way to vehicles coming from other directions on the main green. Second, you must already be in the right-hand lane before reaching the light; turning right from another lane is an offence, even when the arrow is lit.
• To reach the second entrance you must first pass straight by the first entrance, and the red light has prohibited exactly that straight-ahead movement. • The green arrow permits only its own direction; a left turn is covered neither by the right-hand arrow nor by the main red light.
