The driver of which vehicle must give way?
Answer options
Explanation
The bus driver.
This is a junction without signs; there is no priority sign in the picture, so the two roads are of equal status and the right-hand rule governs. The bus enters the junction from the road that comes between the buildings, and the passenger car is on its right; therefore the bus driver must give way and let the car pass first.
The main trap is here: many suppose a public-transport vehicle always has priority. No such rule exists. The only case that gives a bus an advantage is pulling away from a marked stop inside a built-up area; there drivers must give way to a bus that has signalled and is leaving the stop. At a junction no such advantage exists.
The bus's size and weight do not change the rule, but they matter in practical behaviour: a bus has a longer braking distance, accelerates more slowly and has large blind spots along its sides. If you are the passenger car's driver, do not take your eyes off the bus even when you have priority, and be ready to slow down; priority is something granted to you, not something to gamble with.
• The passenger car's driver has priority, because he enters the junction from the bus's right; the bus being public transport does not reverse this order.
