Which driver violates the traffic rules by leaving the intersection with roundabout traffic?
Answer options
Explanation
The passenger car.
Exiting a roundabout is done only from the outermost right-hand lane. In the picture both paths are marked by white arrows on the asphalt: the truck leaves the ring from the outer lane and stays in the right-hand lane of the exit carriageway, while the passenger car cuts across the truck's path from the inner lane next to the central island and goes straight into the left lane of that same carriageway. The double solid line at the bottom of the frame separates the two directions and shows the exit carriageway has two lanes — so the car has ended up in the left lane after exiting.
The safety reason is simple: a roundabout exists to eliminate right-angle collisions, and every vehicle in it circulates slowly in one direction. If someone cuts straight for the exit from the inner ring, he passes alongside a vehicle in the outer lane, in that vehicle's blind spot; the result is a side-to-side collision where nobody expects one. Hence the layered order the law preserves: first move from the inner ring to the outer lane, then exit.
The exam trap is that the eye goes to the truck first because it is big and heavy. The criterion is not vehicle size; it is which lane you are in when you exit.
• The truck does exactly what the law requires: it leaves from the outer lane of the ring and stays in the right lane of the exit carriageway, so it cannot be counted as an offender too. • "None" would be right only if exiting from any lane were permitted; but the passenger car exited from the inner lane and settled in the left lane of the carriageway.
