Ticket 5 · question 62 Updated:

To whom do you have to give way in this situation?

Answer options

  1. Only bus
  2. Passenger car
  3. None ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer None

Explanation

Nobody; priority is yours.

The two signs on the right make the position clear: the yellow diamond "priority road" and beneath it the supplementary priority-road direction plate, which shows the thick line coming from your road and turning to the left at the junction. The straight road opposite is drawn with a thin line, that is, it is minor. Your left indicator is on and you are following exactly that arc of the priority road.

So the dark car coming from the opposite direction is on the minor road and is obliged to give way to you, not you to it. The green bus is also on the priority road, on your left, but when the priority road changes direction, priority-road drivers apply the right-hand rule between themselves, and the bus is on your left, not your right. Therefore it must wait.

The common trap is that on hearing "left turn" a driver automatically thinks he must give priority to oncoming traffic. That rule is right only when the oncoming vehicle is of equal or higher rank; here the oncoming vehicle is on the minor road. The correct habit is: first read the priority-road direction plate and see where its arc runs from and to, then decide. Even so, legal priority is no licence for carelessness; before turning, make sure the other driver has understood the situation the same way.

• This picks only the bus; but the bus is on your left, and between two priority-road vehicles priority belongs to the right, not the left. • This picks the oncoming passenger car; that car is travelling on the minor road and by the sign must give priority to you.
