You have to give way to
Answer options
Explanation
Both drivers.
The downward triangle beside the road means "give way", and the small plate beneath it shows the shape of the junction: the priority road comes from the left and continues along the direction opposite you, and the road you are on is minor. The green bus approaching from the left and the passenger car coming from the opposite direction are both travelling on that same priority road; so with the left indicator you have switched on, you must give way to both and wait until the junction is clear.
The right-hand rule is not applied at such a junction. This is the most important thing to memorise: as long as a sign has made the roads unequal, left and right play no part, and you give priority to all vehicles on the priority road regardless of direction.
The safety reason is clear too: a priority road carries a continuous, fast flow, and any sudden entry from a minor road forces that flow into emergency braking. A left turn is the worst case, because you must cut across both directions and, throughout the manoeuvre, the side of your car is exposed to impact. The bus, because of its mass, also cannot stop quickly. Come forward to the edge of the carriageway, stop, and move only when both directions are genuinely clear.
• The passenger car is only one of the two vehicles on the priority road; the bus on the left is also travelling on that same priority road, and the mere fact that it comes from the left does not destroy its priority. • The bus is bigger and more conspicuous, but the oncoming passenger car is also on the priority road and you must let it pass too.
