When making a left turn you must give way to
Answer options
Explanation
Only the passenger car driver.
The yellow diamond beside the road means you are on the priority road, but the small plate beneath it — which draws the shape of the junction — says the priority road does not continue straight and turns to the right at this very junction. So only two arms are the priority road: the road you have come from and the road on the right. The road opposite, from which the yellow bus is coming, and the road on the left, on which the motorcycle is, are both minor.
The governing rule is: when the priority road changes direction within a junction, drivers travelling on the priority road behave towards one another as at a junction of equal-status roads, that is, by the right-hand rule. The passenger car on the right is on that same priority road and is approaching from your right, so priority is his. The bus and the motorcycle are on minor roads and must give way to you, even when you are turning left.
The exam trap is that bus opposite: as soon as a driver sees a vehicle in front of him, he automatically applies the rule "when turning left give way to the oncoming vehicle"; but that rule holds only between two drivers travelling on roads of equal importance. The correct order of decision is always the same: first the importance of the roads, then the direction of movement. Get into the habit of reading the small plate beneath the yellow diamond as well; without it, this same picture takes a completely different answer.
• The bus is large and right in front of you, and that makes you attribute priority to it; but the bus is travelling on a minor road and is itself obliged to give way to you. • "Neither" would be right if the priority road continued straight; because the priority road turns right, the car on the right is of equal rank with you and comes from your right hand.
