A motorcycle with a sidecar is an asymmetric combination: load, braking and cornering forces are divided unequally between the wheels, and all these forces pass through those same few frame connection points. That is why any play in the connections of the motorcycle and sidecar frames is among the defects that prohibit operation.

Hold the safety reason as a mental image: under braking the sidecar tends to swing forward, and in a bend to be torn outwards. If the connection has play, these small movements repeat every time, the welds and bolts fatigue, and at worst the sidecar separates from the motorcycle at speed with a passenger aboard. Play also upsets the geometry of the combination, and the motorcycle pulls to one side on a straight road.

The exam trap is the second option. The colour of a front fog lamp may be white or yellow; yellow light scatters less in fog and snow and penetrates better, so fitting a yellow fog lamp at the front is not only no offence but a common technical choice. Memorise the general colour rule: front white or yellow, rear red, indicators yellow/amber, reversing lights white. That single rule solves a large part of this chapter's questions.

• A front fog lamp is permitted to have yellow light; the option is tempting because you mistake "yellow" for a prohibited colour, whereas the colour prohibition concerns only red light at the front and white at the rear. • "In both cases" is correct only when both are offences; since a yellow fog lamp at the front is not, this option is ruled out.
