Which picture shows a crossroads?
Answer options
Explanation
Only the left-hand picture.
An intersection is the place where two or more roads cross at the same level. But an exit from an adjacent territory — a building's yard, a car park, a filling station, a factory site — is not a road and does not form an intersection. This whole question is built on that difference.
In the left picture a surfaced road meets a wide dirt road; a dirt road is still a road, so here we have an intersection — with the difference that an unsurfaced road is always subordinate to a surfaced one. In the right picture you see a city street with an arched entrance to a building's yard opening on its right; that is the entrance to an adjacent territory, not a road, and therefore not an intersection.
Telling this difference is directly tied to safety. At an intersection, the priority rules for main and secondary roads or the right-hand rule apply, and the prohibitions on overtaking, U-turns and parking near an intersection take effect. But a driver emerging from an adjacent territory gives way unconditionally to all who pass — including pedestrians. If you take a yard exit for an intersection, you may claim a priority for yourself that does not exist at all. The criterion is not width or surface type; the criterion is whether that route is a "road".
• In the right picture only the arched entrance to a building's yard is visible; an exit from an adjacent territory is not a road and does not form an intersection. • For "both" to be right, the right-hand picture would also have to show two roads meeting; a yard entrance is not that.
