In this situation, you must give way to
Answer options
Explanation
All the drivers.
Where you are standing is not a junction: you are entering the carriageway from an adjacent area — the building's yard and the forecourt beside the shop — and you have signalled left. Leaving an adjacent area, a yard, a car park or a filling station never creates priority; in this situation you must give way to all vehicles travelling on the carriageway and also to pedestrians crossing your path, without exception.
The safety reason is clear: a car emerging from a yard usually has a limited view — a wall, a hedge, parked cars — and joins at low speed a flow travelling several times faster. If such a car were given priority, every yard entrance would turn into an uncontrolled junction. A left turn makes matters worse, because you must cut across both directions of the carriageway: the path of the blue lorry coming from the left and the path of the cars on the right.
The common trap is that the driver unconsciously reaches for the right-hand rule and says to himself "the lorry is coming from the left, so I take precedence". The right-hand rule means something only at a junction of equal-status roads, and here there is no junction at all. Before moving, come forward to the edge of the carriageway, stop, and check both directions separately.
• The lorry is the nearest and largest vehicle in the picture, but it is not the only one; limiting priority to it means ignoring the cars on the right and the pedestrians. • The passenger car on the right must also pass without obstruction, but it is not the only one; when leaving an adjacent area you must give way to everyone.
