In this situation do you have to
Answer options
Explanation
You must give way. The red triangle on your right is the Steep Descent sign showing 12% and it faces you, so you are going down and the yellow vehicle opposite is coming up — and the mountain road here is too narrow for two vehicles to pass, rock face on one side and a drop on the other. On marked steep gradients where passing is difficult, priority belongs to the vehicle travelling uphill and the one descending must stop and give way. The reason is mechanical: a vehicle stopped on a climb has to hold the clutch on the slope and may roll backwards, which on a narrow mountain road is a real danger, while stopping and restarting on a descent costs almost nothing.
