Ticket 5 · question 81 Updated:

In this situation when making a left turn the driver has to

Answer options

  1. Give way ✓ Correct answer
  2. Stop at the crossroads first
Correct answer Give way

Explanation

You must give way.

At this junction no priority sign and no light is fitted, and both roads are surfaced and of the same kind; so the junction is of equal status. At an equal-status junction the only criterion is which side the other vehicle is coming from — and the dark car in the picture is approaching the junction from your right. Therefore you must stop, let it pass first, and then perform the left turn.

One important structural point is also tested here: the shape of a junction creates no priority. The fact that your road reaches a crossing street and apparently "ends" does not turn that street into a priority road. A priority road is established only by a sign, or by a difference in surface (paved as against unpaved); not by apparent geometry.

Safety reason: a left turn is the most dangerous manoeuvre at a junction, because it travels the longest path inside the junction, and throughout that time the side of the car — the weakest part of the body against impact — is exposed to crossing traffic. That is why the law places the burden of caution on the one turning left.

Memorise: with no sign and no light, always look to the right; that single glance is the answer to most of these questions.

• This option assumes that because you reached the junction earlier, or because your road meets a crossing street, you take precedence; at a junction without signs only the direction of entry matters, and the car is on your right.
