In this situation you are required to give way to
Answer options
Explanation
Both drivers.
The downward triangle means "give way": you are on the minor road, and the road passing in front of you is the priority road in both its directions. The green bus from the left and the blue lorry from the right are both travelling on that same priority road, so you must give way to both and wait until the way is clear.
At an unequal junction the right-hand rule is set aside. Memorise this as a fixed order: first the importance of the roads, then the internal rules. As long as the sign has placed you on the minor road, it makes no difference whether the other vehicle comes from the right or the left, goes straight or turns — you are the one who gives way.
The lorry's lit indicator changes nothing either. An indicator is only a declaration of intent; it may have been switched on by mistake or the driver may change his mind, so until the manoeuvre has actually begun do not take it as a reason to move yourself. The safety reason for the whole rule is the same: a priority road carries a continuous flow, and a car emerging from a minor road has low speed and low acceleration; its mistaken entry means a side impact, where a car's body offers the least protection. Come forward to the edge of the carriageway, stop, and check both directions separately.
• The bus really does take precedence, but it is only one of the two vehicles on the priority road; limiting the answer to it means ignoring the lorry on the right. • The lorry comes from the right, and that makes you treat only it as having priority; but the bus on the left is also on the priority road, and at an unequal junction the side of approach is irrelevant.
