In this situation reversing is allowed
Answer options
Explanation
Simultaneously with the lorry, provided you create no obstruction for the lorry driver.
In the picture the triangular "give way" sign is posted facing you, and the road the lorry is on is the priority road. But "giving way" has a precise definition in law: you must not do anything that forces the other driver to change his speed or direction suddenly. Nowhere does that definition say that manoeuvres must be performed in turn, one at a time; if your U-turn path does not conflict with the lorry's path, standing still until his manoeuvre is completely finished is not compulsory.
An important technical point about heavy vehicles: a lorry has a large turning radius because of its length and wheelbase, sometimes swings slightly the opposite way before turning, and the end of its load travels a wider path than the front of the cab. So "creating no obstruction" for a lorry means leaving it more space than you would estimate by eye and not staying in the blind spots beside and behind it.
The exam trap is here: the option that looks more absolute and more cautious is not necessarily the right answer. The law sets the criterion at "not creating an obstruction", not at unconditional stopping. If you do not have enough space or are unsure of the lorry's path, then waiting is the only safe choice.
• "Only after the lorry" creates a condition stricter than the law itself; the legal criterion is not creating an obstruction, not absolute waiting until another's manoeuvre is finished.
