Answer options

  1. Blue, red at the same time as green.
  2. Red,blue,green.
  3. Red simultaneously with green, blue. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer Red simultaneously with green, blue.

Explanation

The red car simultaneously with the green car, and after them the blue car.

The signs in the picture settle the matter. Beside the red car stands the yellow diamond "priority road", and the back of that same sign is visible on the green car's side; that is, red and green are both on the priority road, facing each other. Facing the blue car, however, stands the octagonal STOP sign, and the back of an identical sign is visible on the opposite side of the junction; so the road blue is on is the minor road.

The rule has two layers. First layer: a driver coming from the minor road must give priority to all priority-road vehicles, regardless of which way they subsequently go. Second layer: two cars approaching each other on the priority road and both going straight have no point of intersection; their paths are parallel and putting them in a queue is meaningless. That is why red and green pass together and blue stays put.

The safety reason for the STOP sign matters too: this sign does not merely say "give way", it says "stop completely". A driver who comes forward at a junction with restricted visibility without stopping completely misjudges the speed of the priority-road car, and the classic side impact follows, in which the occupant is struck from the side.

The exam trap is that the blue car's left indicator is on, which pushes the mind towards "so let him turn first". An indicator creates no priority; it is a declaration of intent, not a permission.

• This option sends blue first, whereas blue is behind a STOP sign and has no right to move until the priority road is clear; the STOP sign is the strictest priority sign, not the mildest. • The sequence red, blue, green assumes red and green conflict; but both are on the priority road going straight towards each other. Besides, blue cannot in any circumstances pass before green.
