Which vehicle driver correctly enters a traffic circle intersection?
Answer options
Explanation
Both drivers enter correctly.
Entry to a roundabout is permitted from any lane. In the picture the passenger car in the left lane and the bus in the right lane approach the roundabout side by side, and two black arrows show both their paths into the ring; the round blue sign with three circling arrows is also posted above the entry. Neither is doing anything wrong.
The logic of this freedom is capacity. The entry to a roundabout gives priority in any case to the vehicles circulating inside the ring, speeds are low and all the paths run the same way; so allowing two lanes to enter simultaneously creates no new conflict point and merely shortens the queue behind the entry.
But precisely this freedom does not exist on the way out, and that is the most important thing to memorise: leaving a roundabout is done only from the outside right lane. If someone cuts straight from the inner ring towards the exit, he crosses the path of a car circulating in the outer lane and produces a side-to-side collision. So memorise this pair together: entry from any lane is free, exit only from the right lane. The exam usually asks about these two cases one after the other to see whether you confuse them.
• This option would be right if entry were permitted only from the right lane; but no such restriction on entering a roundabout exists, and the passenger car in the left lane is also moving lawfully. • The bus enters the roundabout in the right lane, in the most natural way possible; no rule bars large vehicles from entering a roundabout.
