Answer options

  1. Passenger car, bus, bicycle.
  2. Bus, bicycle, passenger car.
  3. Bus, car, bicycle.
  4. Bicycle, bus, car. ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer Bicycle, bus, car.

Explanation

Bicycle, bus, passenger car.

The yellow diamond at the bottom of the picture is posted facing the cyclist's path; that is, the bicycle is travelling on the priority road and is the first vehicle to pass through the junction. On the opposite side, the red triangle "give way" faces the blue car, so the blue car is on the minor road and must move after everyone. The yellow bus stands between the two: its indicator is on and it is turning, and in any case it must both give way to the bicycle on the priority road and go ahead of the blue car, because it enters the junction from the blue car's right.

The order becomes bicycle, bus, passenger car. The point to memorise is this: a bicycle is a vehicle too, and on the priority road it has exactly the priority a lorry has. The law does not discriminate between vehicles on the basis of size, weight or speed.

The safety reason lies precisely here. A cyclist is small, silent, and easily lost in the bus's mirrors and blind spot; if the bus driver, while turning, fails to see him and ignores his priority, the collision happens with the worst possible outcome. And that is the exam trap: the candidate's eye sees the big yellow bus and does not take the bicycle in the corner of the picture seriously.

• This option puts the bicycle last and the passenger car first; exactly the reverse of the signs. The blue car has the "give way" sign and the bicycle is on the priority road. • This puts the bus first, but the bus cannot enter the junction before a bicycle that is on the priority road; the size of a vehicle brings no priority. • This option also puts the bus first and moreover brings the blue car, which has the "give way" sign, ahead of the bicycle; both parts are wrong.
