The driver of which vehicle has the right to priority movement?
Answer options
Explanation
The cyclist.
Both signs in the picture are the yellow diamond "priority road" with a direction plate beneath them; that is, the priority road does not stay straight at this junction but changes direction. The blue car and the cyclist are both travelling on that same priority road and facing each other: the arrow beside the bicycle shows his direction of travel, and the blue car's lit indicator shows that this driver intends to turn left.
The key point is here: following the course of the priority road does not exempt you from the left-turn rule. A driver turning left must give priority to vehicles coming from the opposite direction on that same road, even if he too is on the priority road. So the cyclist passes first and the blue car waits.
There are two common traps in this question. First: the candidate sees the yellow diamond and concludes "I am on the priority road so I have priority" — whereas when both are on the priority road, the sign no longer decides. Second: not counting a bicycle as a vehicle. A bicycle is a vehicle and its priority is complete. In safety terms too, a cyclist is narrow, is quickly lost behind the mirror pillar or in a lorry cab's blind spot, and has no protection in a collision; that is why ignoring his priority almost always ends in injury.
• The blue car's driver is on the priority road and is following its course, which is why many judge him the winner; but he is turning left and must give priority to oncoming traffic, that is, to this very cyclist.
