When making a left turn you have to give way to
Answer options
Explanation
The lorry driver.
The traffic light at this junction is switched off, so the question of priority is settled by the signs. A yellow diamond without a direction plate means the priority road continues straight and you are on it. The white car on the right is on the minor road and is obliged to give way to you; that is why "both drivers" is not the correct answer.
But the blue lorry is coming from the opposite direction on that same priority road with its right indicator on. When turning left you must give way to vehicles coming from the opposite direction going straight or turning right; the lorry's right turn falls precisely into that category. So stop, let the lorry complete its manoeuvre, then turn.
Two points to memorise: first, the fact that the oncoming vehicle's right indicator is on does not transfer priority to you — it still takes precedence. Second, a switched-off traffic light does not make the junction "free"; it merely returns it to a sign-governed junction, and if there were no signs either, you would have to treat it as a junction of equal-status roads. A loaded lorry takes a larger radius when turning and the end of its load may swing out of its lane; waiting until its turn is complete is both the law and common sense.
• The white car on the right attracts attention, but it is on the minor road and must give way to you; adding it to the answer means ignoring the priority-road sign. • "Neither" would be right if the lorry were also on the minor road; the lorry comes from the opposite direction on that same priority road and your left turn cuts across its path.
