A right turn along the indicated trajectory is

Answer options

  1. Allowed ✓ Correct answer
  2. Prohibited.
Correct answer Allowed

Explanation

Allowed.

The rule for a right turn has two parts: before the intersection you must take the rightmost position on the carriageway, and you must complete the turn so that on leaving the intersection the vehicle ends up as close as possible to the right edge of the new carriageway.

The trajectory shown is exactly that: the white arc starts by the kerb, sweeps round the corner and places the car in the right-hand lane of the cross street. It neither enters the opposite side of the carriageway nor cuts across other lanes, so a right turn along this path is allowed.

The safety reason for hugging the right edge is that a wide arc takes the nose of the car into lanes whose drivers are not expecting it; on narrow streets that same wide arc means entering the path of oncoming vehicles. In the picture a red car is travelling along the cross street, and any extra deviation leads straight into its path.

A practical point: a permitted trajectory is not necessarily a safe one. A tight turn at the corner cuts across where pedestrians and cyclists cross; slow down before turning, signal in advance, and check the kerb and your right mirror. The exam trap is that candidates assume any curved path is "unusual" and therefore prohibited.

• This option assumes any curved trajectory is a violation; but the legal test is that after the turn the vehicle should be near the right edge of the new carriageway, and the path in the picture does exactly that.
