Ticket 2 · question 45 Updated:

Answer options

  1. 950 kg
  2. 850 kg
  3. 750 kg ✓ Correct answer
Correct answer 750 kg

Explanation

750 kg; above that a towing category ("E") licence is required.

The rule: a holder of categories "B", "C", "D" and sub-categories "C1" and "D1" may attach a trailer without a separate towing licence, provided the maximum permissible mass of that trailer does not exceed 750 kg. Note that the criterion is the "maximum permissible mass", that is the figure the manufacturer has written on the trailer's plate — not the weight of the load you have put in it that day. Even an empty but heavy-rated trailer falls outside the allowance if its plate shows a higher figure.

The technical reason for this boundary: a trailer lighter than 750 kg usually has no independent braking system, and braking rests entirely on the towing vehicle. Up to that point the trailer's effect on braking distance and stability stays within a controllable range; above it the trailer pushes the car forward under braking and, in bends or at speed, leads to snaking and jack-knifing. Memorise the figure 750 exactly; 850 and 950 are merely nearby numerical traps.

• 950 kg is above the legal limit; a trailer with that permissible mass requires a category "E" licence. • 850 kg is a figure that appears among the options only because it is close to 750 and has no standing in the law.
